Russia is working on easing visa procedures for six countries, including India, Syria and Indonesia, the state TASS news agency cited Deputy Foreign Minister Evgeny Ivanov as saying on Sunday (March 5). Ivanov explained that in addition to India, similar procedures are being developed for Angola, Vietnam, the Philippines, and Syria.

Russia Country
  • Capital: Moscow
  • Population: 14.34 crores (2021) World Bank
  • Currency: Russian Ruble
  • GDP per capita: 12,194.78 USD (2021) World Bank
  • Continent: Europe, Asia
  • Official language: Russia

TASS reported that Russia is also preparing to establish Intergovernmental Agreements (IGAs) for visa-free trips with 11 countries, including Barbados, Haiti, Kuwait, Malaysia, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Trinidad, and Zambia.

Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which has resulted in thousands of deaths and millions of people being displaced, Moscow has been seeking closer ties with China, India, and African nations. Despite the condemnation and sanctions imposed by the United States, Japan, and the European Union, China, and India have taken a neutral stance.

India refrained from blaming Russia for the invasion while significantly increasing its purchases of Russian oil. According to the latest report, in February, India’s crude oil imports from Russia reached an all-time high of 1.6 million barrels per day, surpassing the combined imports from Iraq and Saudi Arabia, which are India’s traditional oil suppliers.

This marks the fifth consecutive month that Russia has been the primary crude oil supplier for India, accounting for more than one-third of all oil imported by the country. These figures were reported by energy cargo tracker Vortexa.

India ranks as the world’s third-largest importer of crude oil, after China and the United States. To take advantage of the discounted prices of Russian oil, which was shunned by some Western countries as a means of punishing Moscow for its invasion of Ukraine, India has been increasing its imports of crude oil from Russia.

The impact of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on the travel industry has been significant, and its effects will continue to be felt for many years. According to the Border Guard Service of the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation, in 2022, the flow of foreign tourists to the country fell by 96.1%.

Foreign Minister Lavrov pointed out that the decline in tourism in Russia was not primarily due to visa issues but rather logistical restrictions.
